That is a very unorthadox way to play the guitar. They teach you to never use you're thumb and always use you're other 4 fingers as it's more efficiant, allows for better timing, and smoother fret sound (cleaner push on the strings). The thumb allows more pressue to be put on the strings with those other fingers.
That's the first I've seen someone do that since my 65 year old grandfather did a decade ago.
