Description:

A short rendition of one of the precious few fragments of surviving ancient Greek music! This haunting, almost dream-like fragment of melody was found on papyrus & is catalogued as "Anonymous, Bellermann 97-104". It is played here,on a lyre closley resmebling the ancient Greek Kithara;the larger wooden lyre favoured by the professional musicians of ancient Greece(the lyre is in fact,a replica of a Jewish Temple lyre, depicted on a Jewish coin from 135CE - it is almost identical to the Kithara). I have uploaded another version of the same melody on Youtube,(which I have entitled "FRAGMENT OF ANCIENT GREEK MELODY")using a different lyre,(the Jewish "Nevel" harp) which tonally resembles the sound of the ancient Greek Lyre(the lyre made with a turtle shell resonator, over which there was stretched a membrane of taut animal hide). I heared this lovely melody for the first time,on the CD "Musique de la Grece Antique"(track 13). What a terrible tragedy, that of all the amazing cultures of ancient civilizations,so few fragments of their original melodies and music from antiquity have been preserved... Please see my detailed article about this somewhat unique musical experiment: http://klezfiddle1.spaces.live.com/blog/ NB this home-spun little musical experiment is by NO means meant as some pompous "academic" reconstruction - I'm just a humble self-taught musician with an interest in ancient music,NOT some know-it-all "boffin"!;o)

This fragment of melody was found on papyrus,& was written some time in Antiquity by an anonymous Greek composer. It is catalogued simply as "Anonymous, Bellermann 97-104". It is so tragic, that all that remains of the once magnificent musical culture of ancient Greece, are just a pitiful few tantalizing remnants like this one - all that amazing beauty, forever lost...

The ancient Greek lyre made from a turtle shell is in fact called a "Lyra" - sadly, there was not a pet store I could find who would donate to me a turtle for the purposes of TOTAL authenticity;o) I have, however, uploaded several clips of ancient Greek music on a lyre with a skin soundboard, which is tonally similar to the Lyra - check out my upload of "The First Delphic Hymn to Apollo",from c.138BC!
