Well, they are traditional, and our kobudo is usually done with the authentic style, not modern ones, but how much "old fashioned" depends on your taste - I am hoping to get all Shureido equipment eventually, expensive but they are out of Okinawa, so as traditional as it gets!

The only reason I can do pushups with either long and short ends to the mat is the stiffness of my joints, in this case my wrists, which are the weak link in this maneuver. Sure, my arms give out by the time I get to 10, but you can get a much deeper range of motion with these than any empty hand done directly on the mat (our cinder block puchups get you the depth, but you then have to survive the knuckle punishment!)
